Volume Ten Number One

November 2012 - January 2013

Piedmont Council, California

Words from the Chief

Hello Brothers,

I am proud to say that these past few months have been successful. The lodge successfully helped the council set up and tear down the council's tree lot, which was a smashing success in its own right. The Vice-chiefs, the key advisers, and I completed the Lodge Leadership Development meeting. As per tradition, the effective elongomats training session was suggested and ignored. The coming months are filled with wonderful events, the PoppiFest in March and Section W3S Conclave in April. I highly suggest that you, especially Ordeal members, attend the conclave, which is superhero/avengers themed.

Yours in Brotherhood,
Evans H.

The Fall Banquet

The Lodge held its Fall Banquet on November 19 at the Corpus Christi Guild Hall. Adult and youth members attended the event. Every year, Lodge members meet to review the previous year's activity and go over plans for the next.

This year Scouts and Scouters from every troop attended. Russell Griffith, Carson's cousin, spoke on his experience training to be a nuclear technician at the Navy Academy at Annapolis. He also answered many questions on renewable energy, the field in which he works.

Many thanks to the Carters for their great work organizing the dinner!.

Section W3S Conclave 2013

April 26-28th 2013, Cutter Scout Reservation

The Conclave is coming up quickly, and registration is open! You can get early-bird pricing if you sign up now by going the Conclave Registration site.

A Conclave is a gathering of arrowmen that is organized and planned each year by the section. At a typical Conclave you will be able to learn a variety of new things in the training sessions that are offered. You can meet arrowmen from other lodges and trade patches. Lodges battle against each other in competitions, some of which you won't find anywhere else. Conclave is also where section officers are elected. You may even get to meet a national officer of the OA. Three things that every conclave has are lots of spirit, fellowship, and fun.

What will I find at the W3S Conclave?

Great Training Classes
Native American Drumming and Dancing
Ceremony Evaluations
The Midway
Lodge Competitions
Patch Trading
A Themed Show
Section Trading Post
VIA Luncheon
Silent and Live Patch Auctions
Section Officer Elections
Tons of Food
And Much More!
If you are an Ordeal member, and it's been at least 10 months since your Ordeal, you can get Brotherhood at this event too.

How much does it cost?

The regular registration cost for the 2012 Conclave is $75.00 per person however, if you register online before the event you won't have to pay full price. Register by April 14th and you'll only pay $60.00. As an additional early bird special, if you register by the end of February, you'll only pay $50.00! The earlier you register, the more you save. Register NOW!

Spring Ordeal and PoppiFest

Its that time of year again! The 10th Spring Ordeal and PoppiFest is coming up on March 15th-17th, at Camp Augusta.

As you know, this is an induction weekend for the Lodge, and a very important event for our 62th year. We will also hold the traditional PoppiFest Carnival on Saturday night. We need everyone's help to insure a successful weekend. The Ceremonies Team from Hungteetsepoppi will be performing the ceremonies for us this spring. We hope to have a number of boys and adults seal their membership in the Lodge by becoming Brotherhood as well.

We need as much help from the youth and adult members as possible. In particular, we need as many adults as possible to provide rides for the Scouts to camp.

Check-in at Camp Augusta will be between 7:00 and 9:00 PM Friday, March 15th. The weekend will conclude at mid-morning on Sunday, and we should be back in Piedmont by 2:00pm.

There will be a special car coming back Saturday night for the Troop 6 crowd so they can attend the Pancake Breakfast on Sunday morning.

You should have already received an invitation to PoppiFest in your email, so please send it in soon.

The Centennial Rock

As part of the Orders 100th Anniversary, a special commemorative fireplace (The Brotherhood Fireplace) is being constructed that will include rocks from each of the lodges. This fireplace will be on-site at the 2015 National OA Conference.

The criteria for this rock is that it fits a specific size category (fits in a box...), distinctive looking, and would have the lodge name and council city and state engraved on it.
The rock you see above was made by cutting the lettering out from a piece of sandblasting stencil material (a heavy rubber/vinyl material with a self adhesive backing). An X-Acto knife was used, and the letters removed from the stencil. The stencil was placed on the clean, warmed rock, and then it was sandblasted until the letters we etched into the rock a proper depth. The stencil was removed, and the letter areas filled with a dark stain so the lettering was visible. Pretty neat!

Did you know....

The OA will celebrate it's 100th anniversary in 2015? The National Council has a huge Centennial program planned, and part of it involves the Centennial Crate. The crate was delivered to lodges at NOAC 2012, and the program incudes the creation of the Brotherhood Fireplace with stones from every lodge engraved with the lodge name, council and state. Another part of the program involves the creation of a Lodge History book. In this book, the lodge can create a history of their lodge for all to see and enjoy. Our lodge is planning to build this history using a photobook technique so multiple copies can be made and easily distributed.

Another part of the crate involves filling the crate with wood for the Brotherhood bonfire at the 2015 NOAC, and the slide-on lid of the crate as a canvas to present the lodge totem in a standard format for all lodges.
Do you want to be part of the Centennial Program? If so, talk to Evans or Kevin about helping out!

BTW, NOAC 2015 will be a huge event that should not be missed!

Great Pictures....

Bill and Pat at their best...
