Words from the Chief

Hello Brothers,

Another year has passed, and looking back on 2013, I'm proud of the service our lodge has performed for both scouting and the community.
We recently completed our annual rechartering, and, in recognition of our achievements, we have earned the Journey to Excellence Gold Award for the first time in our lodge's history.
In other news, we passed another milestone for the year, the Lodge Banquet, I'm assured it was a festive affair with an interesting and edifying speaker. Additionally, the lodge performed dutifully in the Tree Lot setup and teardown.
I look forward to all the exciting events we have planned for the coming year, and hope you'll join the us for them.

Yours in Brotherhood,
Brendan G.

The OA Backpacking Trip

Emigrant Wilderness

The Lodge held its first annual backpacking trip into the Emigrant Wilderness last summer.
In 2014, we will hold another backpacking trip on July 27th - Aug. 2nd.

We are confident that we will have another spectacular trip. We hope you will plan on attending!

Fall Ordeal and PoppiFest

October 4-6th 2013, Camp Augusta

Last October, the Lodge made their way up to the beautiful Camp Augusta for the annual “inauguration” ceremony to be held. The scouts that were nominated to join the Order of the Arrow had to work their hardest to help build camping platforms, strip paint from bathrooms, and other tasks, all while eating very small portions of food. Although very tough for the newcomers, doing so proved that they were the right set of men to join this exclusive group. Luckily, the weather was fantastic over the two days, making it more enjoyable for everyone participating. After the second, day, the new participants had it easy, eating a large and well-made dinner, and moving on to fun prizes. Although the days were not the easiest for everyone, we all had a great time and cannot wait to do it again next year.

Fourteen new Ordeal members were inducted, and three new Brotherhood members.

Webeloree Overnight 2013

September 7-8th, 2013

On Sunday, September 8th, the lodge once again desended on Tilden Park to cook breakfast for the Webelos and parents at the Webeloree. The lodge adults served up the traditional French Toast to the group.

The weather was great, and the crew had an easy time setting up and cooking. Lots was consumed, and the team had completed, cleaned up, and was on the way home by 10am. Easy service!

Lodge Fall Banquet

November 3rd, 2013, at Gibson Center

On November 3rd, 2013, the Hungteetsepopi lodge held its annual fall banquet at Gibson Hall, Corpus Christi. A great turn out along with great food and fun talks all added up to a great night. And who could forget the pumpkin pie? Newly inducted members to the O.A. Brotherhood came and met many new faces and learned more about their future lodge. Mid-way through the night, an exciting presentation was given on our new Bay Bridge by Rob Kobal, of Caltrans. Lovely to watch and very interesting to hear about, we were all astonished at what a big task it was. A fun and full night, everyone went back home with new friends and full stomachs.

Fall Service Projects 2013

Tree Lot Set-Up and Tear-Down

This year, the lodge made a major push to support the set-up and tear-down of the Council Christmas Tree lot. 23 lodge members showed up for each event, and we provided 70.5 and 38.25 hours respectively.

This year, former lodge member Wayne Marzolf lead a crew and designed and built new work benches for the lot that could be assembled and torn down quickly. The new benches ar much sturdier than the old bench-work, and should last for many years. Thanks Wayne!

During Tear-Down, Mr. Steward loaded the last tree out of the lot into a two seater BMW. Thanks John for being a great Tree Lot Chairman!

Designed by Forest, you should be one of the first to get one!

State of the Lodge 2013

What the lodge accomplished in 2013

This year, the lodge completed the second year of the new National OA JTE (Journey to Excellence) program, which rates lodges performance.

Lodges are rated on 17 major performance categories, and a lodge can either be non-rated, or achieve Bronze, Silver of Gold status. Last year, we achieved Silver status, which is quite good for first year performance. This year, with planning and hard work, we achieved Gold status, which is the highest rating.

The lodge added 15 new Ordeal members, which is our highest number in several years. We also converted 9 lodge members from Ordeal members to Brotherhood, at three different events with ceremonies. This is a >50% conversion rate, which is much higher than the 30% minimum required.

The lodge performed 713 hours of service to the council, community, and Camp Augusta. This equates to over 10 hours of lodge service per lodge members. An amount over twice what was done last year!

All in all, the lodge performed above and beyond in 2013!
